Prevent Weevils from Invading your Pantry

At some point in your adult life, you are likely to find weevils in your dry grains such as flour, rice, cereal, nuts, and beans – regardless of how clean your pantry is. Some may already be present in the dry food you buy, while others can enter your home through cracks and holes. These bugs primarily feed on outdoor plants, however when it turns to winter, they start searching for indoor food sources.

To prevent a weevil infestation, don’t purchase any dry products with damaged packaging or that are past their expiration dates.

Decant your dry items in one of my resealable bags (I have various sizes available), add a few bay leaves (they act as a natural repellent) and place in an airtight container.

Be sure to keep your pantry clean and dry as weevils love moisture and titbits. Should you experience a weevil infestation it is important to kill the weevils rather than just dispose of them to avoid re-infestation. Wrap the infested food in my cling film and leave it in the sun for a few days (or microwave for five minutes) then dispose. Finish off with a deep clean of your pantry and inspect all other dry ingredients.
